Website not appearing in Google Maps: quick audit of broken local SEO

TL;DR. If your website doesn't appear when someone searches for your service in your town, the problem is almost never "SEO" in general: it's broken local SEO. Most SMEs in Gipuzkoa (and Spain) lose customers because their Google listing is incomplete, their NAP is inconsistent, or they have no reviews. This 7-point checklist helps you diagnose and fix it in 1 day.

The first mistake: confusing SEO with local SEO

They're not the same. You might rank 1st in Google for "industrial automation in Spain" but disappear for "industrial automation in Elgoibar" if your local SEO is broken. 46% of Google searches have local intent (Think with Google, 2024). If you're not there, you don't exist.

Early warning signs:

  • You get customers by word of mouth, but your website doesn't show.
  • Google Maps points you to the wrong local shop.
  • Your Google listing is "almost empty".
  • You've never asked for reviews.

The 7-point checklist (1 day max)

1. Verified and complete Google Business Profile

  • Is your listing verified? (Not shared with another business).
  • Have you filled in hours for all seasons?
  • Do you have updated photos (interior, exterior, products, team)?
  • Does the description contain the real keywords people search for?
  • Are all services listed?

Tool: Google Business Profile (free, 15 minutes).

2. Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone)

Your name, address, and phone number must be identical on:

  • Google Business Profile.
  • Your website.
  • Directories (PaginasBlancas, AXEP, Yelp, etc.).
  • Social media.
  • Invoices.

A mobile number instead of a landline, a business name with "SL" in some places but not others, an address without a number... 35% of Spanish SMEs have inconsistent NAP (Moz Local, 2025). Google won't show you if it can't identify you.

3. Real and sufficient reviews

  • Do you have at least 3 reviews?
  • Does anyone reply to all of them (positive and negative)?
  • Do you proactively ask for reviews after each sale?

Tool: Post-sale email with a Google Reviews link + QR in the store.

4. Verified physical location

  • If you work in Elgoibar, Google needs to clearly see you're there.
  • A PO box isn't enough; you need a physical address or a clearly defined service area.
  • Add coverage areas if you serve multiple towns.

5. Local mentions and town references

  • Does your website mention the towns where you work?
  • Google needs to see you're local to Gipuzkoa, not "somewhere around".
  • Use location pages: /pintxos-san-sebastian, /awnings-hernani, /kiosk-elgoibar.

6. Phone and WhatsApp connected

A mobile number with WhatsApp is a visibility plus. If your listing has WhatsApp and your website doesn't, Google may distrust you.

7. Recent activity

Google favors activity. Posting photos, replying to reviews, publishing local offers... tells Google "this business is alive".

Typical mistakes that kill local SEO

  1. Shared listing with another business. Check directly in your industry. If you have the same name and address as another, Google merges you.
  2. Wrong category. "Bar" when you're a hairdresser sends you to the wrong competitors.
  3. Phone number that doesn't ring. Google calls to verify. If it's always busy, you get penalized.
  4. Stock photos instead of real ones. Google detects generic photos.
  5. Inactive in winter/season. If you close for 2 months and don't announce it, Google turns you off.

Real case: a tapas bar in Donostia

  • Before: listing with 3 photos, incomplete hours, 0 reviews, phone that didn't ring. Ranked page 3 for "pintxos Donostia".
  • After: 8 new photos, full hours, 17 reviews (all replied to), WhatsApp visible, local offers posted.
  • Result: page 1, position 2, in 6 weeks. 30% more walk-in customers saying they came "from Google Maps".

Free tools to audit

  1. Google Business Profile (obviously).
  2. Google Search Console → "Performance" → filter by your town/category.
  3. Whitespark Local Search Forum (to verify NAP across directories).
  4. Moz Local Check (free, 3 searches/month).

What to do this evening

  1. Open Google and search "[your service] in [your town]".
  2. Check where your listing ranks.
  3. Open your GBP and fill in every empty field.
  4. Ask 3-5 customers for reviews this week.
  5. Post a new local offer or photo.

That's 20-30 minutes. And it works.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why doesn't my Google Maps listing appear? Needs verification, inconsistent NAP, little activity, or Google doesn't trust your address. Also check if it's shared with another business.

How often should I update Google Business? At least one photo/month and reply to every review within 48h. Consistent activity is a ranking factor.

Do client reviews really matter? Yes. A listing with fewer than 3 reviews or unanswered reviews, drops in rankings. Google values interaction.

How do I get out of Google's "uncertainty" zone? Verify your listing, post real photos, keep NAP constant, and ask for reviews. If it still doesn't show, contact Google support directly.

What if customers search for my name and I don't appear? Check that your GBP name matches how people search for you. Don't put "Bar Txepetxa SL" if people search for "Txepetxa Bar".

In summary

  • Activate digital tickets: 5 minutes.
  • Add QR + WhatsApp + offer: 15 minutes.
  • Measure results: 2 weeks.
  • Sell more: 1 month.

You don't need to change TPV. You just need to activate a feature almost all already have.
